Summary of Responsibilities

Performs a wide variety of diversified, complex, tax-related tasks and supervises other tax department personnel.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares personal and corporate tax returns, including the most complex.
  2. Approves all returns with the exception of those dealing with specialized issues requiring the expertise of another manager or director.
  3. Acts as a resource for tax staff and senior tax accountants, tax supervisors, and tax managers.
  4. Performs more complex tax research.
  5. Reviews research projects.
  6. Prepares projections and becomes involved in planning for more complex clients.
  7. Becomes involved in tax planning for less complex client situations.
  8. Assists accounting and auditing staff members in client meetings.
  9. Develops a general understanding of firm philosophy and tax opinions.
  10. Reviews tax accruals and associated working papers.
  11. Communicates tax developments to firm.
  12. Analyzes IRS notices and drafts responses.
  13. Reviews IRS notice responses prepared by other tax personnel.
  14. Represents clients before the IRS.
  15. Delegates work to tax staff, senior tax accountants and tax supervisors and supervises work.
  16. Participates in tax department administrative projects.
  17. Works with directors to establish standards for the tax staff and evaluates and counsels tax staff members.
  18. Assumes the responsibility for the smooth flow of tax returns. Acts as director-in-charge for a variety of clients. Acts as key client for a variety of engagements. Bills clients and discusses fees with clients.
  19. Contributes to the client service team by producing quality work with quick turnaround and attentive service.
  20. Establishes good working relationships with all directors and staff members.
  21. Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and imagination.

Other Functions

  1. Exhibits time management and organization skills.
  2. Assists with recruitment and training of other tax department personnel.
  3. Develops entrepreneurial approach to client service and good working relationships with client personnel.
  4. Maintains contacts with peers, develops network of business contacts, meets with prospective clients, and cultivates referrals.
  5. Accepts volunteer positions in community organizations.
  6. Demonstrates industry expertise.
  7. Writes articles and makes presentations.
  8. Develops a broad general knowledge of economic, political, and business conditions.
  9. Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Job Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or other related program.
  2. Advanced degree (generally law or master’s in taxation).
  3. Completion of career development programs designed to enhance management, communication, and personal skills.
  4. Proficiency in use of computers and tax software programs.
  5. CPA certification.
  6. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Regular and consistent attendance.
  8. Five to seven years’ experience in tax department of CPA firm.
  9. Ideally candidate will have experience in large regional firms or big four firms.

Summary of Responsibilities

Organizes and coordinates clients’ tax data for the accurate, timely completion of individual tax returns and simple to moderately complex corporate, partnership, S-corp, and trust tax returns.

Essential Functions

  • Reviews tax information submitted by client for completeness; meets with or calls clients with questions.
  • Possesses knowledge of tax regulations in order to answer clients’ questions.
  • Prepares personal tax returns of various complexities.
  • Prepares corporate, partnership, and S-corp returns not requiring advanced expertise.
  • Prepares amended returns of any variety and complexity.
  • Prepares personal tax projections through use of computer software.
  • Responds to tax notices of any sort and does initial drafts of any letters required.
  • Performs tax research projects requiring minimal expertise.
  • Prepares property tax refund forms, employee benefit plan tax returns, carryback returns for NOLs, and payroll tax returns.
  • Completes S-election and requests for accounting changes, as required.
  • Makes adjusting entries and completes trial balances to prepare a tax return.
  • Maintains a good understanding of depreciation and depreciation computer software package to set up clients, and reads and understands depreciation reports.
  • Prepares tax accruals as may be required in preparing corporate tax returns.
  • Works with confidential client matters; requires ability to keep matters confidential.

Other Functions

  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Experience and Skills

  • At least two (2) years’ experience preparing individual, corporate, partnership, and S-corp tax returns.
  • At least one (1) year of experience using computerized tax preparation, tax planning, and tax research software.
  • Ability to operate a computer, calculator, and other general office equipment.

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or bachelor’s degree in another discipline with various course work in taxes and accounting, through intermediate level.

  • Records transactions in ledgers and prepares trial balances and simple financial statements using computer software programs.
  • Reconciles accounts to control accounts.
  • Performs schedule computations of accruals, property, and equipment and calculates depreciation expense.
  • Performs audit or review procedures as assigned.
  • Assists in proofing financial statements, tax returns, and other documents.
  • Completes basic tax return functions, on occasion.
  • Performs other accounting and auditing as needed in engagements and as assigned.

Other Functions

  • May be given senior level responsibilities of planning and scheduling engagements.
  • May be required to perform all phases of an engagement including report writing and tax return preparation.
  • May supervise other Staff Accountant Interns.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
